I always seem to be in the mood for a good documentary in January & February. The glow of the holidays has faded & I just seem to want something a little more, well, real. So when I stumbled upon The Business of Being Born languishing around #87 in my Netflix queue, it immediately caught my eye & I wondered whether it was worth the hour & a half. Was it ever.Okay, so I cried. A lot. This movie is moving & startling. Humourous & heartbreaking. Empowering & daunting. It may even make you question your own birth experiences. It... More »
So, I was thinking the other day that I really need to see all of the movies nominated for Best Picture at this year's Academy Awards (1 down, 4 to go). But to be honest with you, besides the one movie I have already seen (Slumdog Millionaire...rush right out & see it, trust me) none of them are really calling me out to the theatre. They are all just a little glum. And I don't know, but it seems like right now we might just need something other than glum. I'm not saying that we need more inconsequential fluff... More »
Slumdog Millionaire. Don't just take my word for it. Take Amreen's. Or Ali's. Or pretty much anyone out there who has seen the film. I have yet to meet a person who has seen this film who doesn't just love it. So my hubby & I figured we couldn't miss this one & used Grandma being in town (yay Grandma!!) as an excuse to get out of the house. Totally worth it! Slumdog tells the story of 2 brothers growing up in the Dharavi slums of Mumbai & how their paths diverge & then converge at critical points in their lives. Early... More »
(possible spoilers ahead....don't say I didn't warn you) No, it's not some new club or nightspot (new club. ha. funny). No, Friday nights rock (again) because of the return of two critically-acclaimed, yet vastly under-watched tv shows. Friday Night Lights (btw, how hot are these two? And they're the "old" ones!) &.... Battlestar Galactica. These two shows actually have a lot in common (just bear with me!). Both shows debuted with massive critical acclaim, yet have struggled to find a mass audience. Both shows have won numerous awards (both have won the prestigious Peabody Award for excellence in broadcasting),... More »
My hubby & I sat down to watch our latest Netflix pick, The Duchess, & the one question that went through my mind was whether or not Keira Knightley was ready to carry a film? Incidentally, the only reason my husband agreed to actually sit down & watch this movie was because of Keira Knightley. So I guess we know where his vote is. I know she has starred in many films, even "headlining" a few (Atonement, Pride & Prejudice), but in The Duchess she is required to carry the movie. Check out the trailer for yourself. The Duchess is based on the... More »
Or at least the Brits can't... You see, Young Victoria is scheduled for UK release March 6, but as of yet has no North American release. Which is strange considering the fact that Canadians & Americans just can't seem to get enough of the "zany" antics of the British Royal Family (as evidenced by The Queen, Elizabeth, Elizabeth: The Golden Age, The Tudors, Prince Harry - maybe that last one is just me). It looks like a decent enough movie & I absolutely adore Emily Blunt. She does seem to embody Victoria. And the rest of the cast is nothing... More »
Wait, first I have to give you the back story. When my Mother-in-law was last out to visit she asked me if I would record The Bachelorette, as she was missing that night's episode. The next day she wanted to watch it, & both boys were napping, so I watched with her thinking I would be rolling my eyes the entire time culminating in the need to vomit. Basically that was the case, but for some strange reason (possibly because she was here the next week & we watched that episode too) I couldn't help but keep watching. It was the whole... More »
Well, that's how I feel right now. Uninspired. I just can't seem to write much of anything. It's not for lack of movie watching. We've watched The Kingdom (Peter Berg directed movie that is basically Friday Night Lights in Saudi Arabia - a good watch), Lions for Lambs (excellent performances by all - Tom Cruise, Meryl Streep, Robert Redford, with the best by up-&-comer Andrew Garfield), The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor (altogether unmemorable or should I say unwatchable, which is saying a lot from someone who actually enjoyed the first two movies), The Love Guru (god awful, I... So, it is the weekend after Christmas & I have to admit it...I have major Christmas let-down. Not that my Christmas wasn't lovely (even though we had no family in town we were invited to friends' for both Christmas Eve & Christmas Day). Not that I didn't get nice presents (thank you hubby & "Ann Taylor" for the lovely clothes). Not that I didn't enjoy every exuberant moment of my 3-year old discovering the magic of Christmas (asking for a jingle bell from Santa just like the little boy in The Polar Express). You see, I get Christmas let-down every... More »
The first trailer for Night at the Museum 2: Battle of the Smithsonian was released today & it certainly looks like they've upped the ante from the first movie. Check it out below. Ben Stiller, Jonah Hill, Amy Adams, Robin Williams, Hank Azaria, Owen Wilson, etc, etc!! Quite a line up if you ask me. I just love the Clint Howard mission control cameo. And how cute is Amy Adams as Amelia Earhart?!?! Night at the Museum 2 hits theatres May 22, 2009. (Looks like next summer's movie slate is shaping up to be HUGE...I can hardly wait!!!)... More »
